The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 While he was in the highest part of the horizon: 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 His heart lies not of what he saw; 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 What! unto you the males and unto Him the females? 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 What! Will man get whatever he dreams of? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
