The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the setting star, 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of his desire. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 When that which covers covered the lote-tree; 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
