۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he asked his father and his people, "What are these images to which you are so devoted?" 52 They said: We found our fathers worshipping them. 53 He said: Verily ye and your fathers were in plain error. 54 They said, "Have you come to us with truth, or are you of those who jest?" 55 He said, 'Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who originated them, and I am one of those that bear witness thereunto. 56 And [I swear] by Allah, I will surely plan against your idols after you have turned and gone away." 57 Then he made them fragments, all except the big one of them, that haply unto it they may return. 58 They said: "Who has done this to our aliha (gods)? He must indeed be one of the wrong-doers." 59 They said, "We heard a youth talk of them: He is called Abraham." 60 [The others] said: "Then bring him before the peoples eyes, so that they might bear witness [against him]!" 61 They said, 'So, art thou the man who did this unto our gods, Abraham?' 62 He said: rather he hath wrought it, this big one of them; so question them, if they ever speak. 63 They then turned to themselves, and said: verily ye it is who are the wrong-doers. 64 But then they reversed their minds: 'You know they do not speak' 65 He said: 'Would you then worship that, instead of Allah, which can neither help nor harm you? 66 "Fie upon you, and upon that which you worship besides Allah! Have you then no sense?" 67 They said, “Burn him and help your Gods, if you want to.” 68 We said, "O Fire! be thou cool, and (a means of) safety for Abraham!" 69 And they intended to do him an evil, but We made them the worst losers. 70 for We saved him and Lot, [his brother's son, by guiding them] to the land which We have blessed for all times to come. 71 And We bestowed upon him Ishaque (Isaac), and (a grandson) Ya'qub (Jacob). Each one We made righteous. 72 And We made them Imams who guided (people) by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good and the keeping up of prayer and the giving of the alms, and Us (alone) did they serve; 73 And to Lot We gave judgement and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing wicked deeds. Indeed, they were a people of evil, defiantly disobedient. 74 And We admitted him to Our Mercy: for he was one of the Righteous. 75
