The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 Pollution shun! 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 So that is a tough day. 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and sons standing before him, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 May he be condemned! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
