Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
