The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 What! Will man get whatever he dreams of? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
