Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn, 1 and the ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 led rebellious lives, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
