Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Kaf. Ha. Ya. Ain. Sad. 1 AN ACCOUNT of the grace which thy Sustainer bestowed upon His servant Zachariah: 2 When he called to his Lord a private supplication. 3 Saying: My Lord! Lo! the bones of me wax feeble and my head is shining with grey hair, and I have never been unblest in prayer to Thee, my Lord. 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 “He being my successor and the heir of the Descendants of Yaqub (Jacob); and my Lord, make him a cherished* one.” (* Make him a Prophet among the Descendants of Israel.) 6 "Zachariah, We bring you good news of a son whose name shall be John. We have not given such a name to anyone before." 7 "How can I have a son, O Lord" he said, "when my wife is barren and I am old and decrepit?" 8 (The angel) answered: "Thus will it be. Your Lord said: 'This is easy for Me; for when I brought you into being you were nothing.' 9 Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." 10 Thereupon he came out of the sanctuary unto his people and signified to them [by gestures]: "Extol His limitless glory by day and by night!" 11 "O John! Hold the Book with all your strength." We had bestowed wisdom upon him while he was still a child; 12 And (made him) sympathetic to men as a mercy (or a grant) from Us, and pure from sins [i.e. Yahya (John)] and he was righteous, 13 and full of piety towards his parents; and never was he haughty or rebellious. 14 So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! 15
