The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
