Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Enter among My servants 29 into My Paradise. 30
