[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said, “This is the she-camel – one day shall be her turn to drink, and on the other appointed day, shall be your turn.” 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
