The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 arise and warn, 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 And your garments purify! 4 and defilement flee! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 Then he looked round; 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
