a good many of olden times, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And also our forefathers? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
