Said the chieftains of Firaun’s people, “He is really an expert magician.” 109 who seeks to drive you out from your land. What would you have us do?' 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 Who will bring you every learned magician." 112 And the enchanters came to Firon (and) said: We must surely have a reward if we are the prevailing ones. 113 He said, 'Yes, indeed; and you shall be among the near-stationed.' 114 They said: "O Moses! wilt thou throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" 115 He said, "You throw [first]!" When they made their cast, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck them with awe, for they showed a great [feat of] magic. 116 And We inspired Moses (saying): Throw thy staff! And lo! it swallowed up their lying show. 117 ۞ Thus the truth was upheld, and the falsehood that they practised was exposed. 118 So the (great ones) were vanquished there and then, and were made to look small. 119 And the enchanters were thrown down, prostrating (themselves). 120 and said, "We believe in the Lord of the Universe, 121 The Lord of Musa and Harun. 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 I will cut off on opposite sides a hand and a foot, and then crucify you all' 124 They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will return. 125 Will you punish us just because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us? Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance and cause us to die as those who have submitted [to You].' 126
