The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Eager to roast; 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except those who pray, 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
