The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
