The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
