The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 by the moon, which follows it, 2 And the day when it shows it, 3 And [by] the night when it covers it 4 By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion; 7 And given the faculty of knowing what is disruptive and what is intrinsic to it. 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 Thamud belied in their exorbitance. 11 When the most wretched of them was sent forth. 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 And He feared not the consequence thereof 15
