Said the Chiefs of the people of Pharaoh: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed. 109 "His plan is to get you out of your land: then what is it ye counsel?" 110 They said, 'Put him and his brother off a while, and send among the cities musterers, 111 who should bring to you every skillful magician." 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant." 113 Answered [Pharaoh]: "Yes; and verily, you shall be among those who are near unto me." 114 They said: "O Musa (Moses)! Either you throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" 115 He said: cast ye. Then when they cast down, they enchanted the eyes of the people, and terrified them and brought mighty magic to bear. 116 We said to Moses: "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed up their conjurations in no time. 117 ۞ So the truth was established, and what they did became null. 118 Thus were they there defeated and brought low. 119 And the sorcerers were cast down, bowing themselves. 120 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds, 121 “The Lord of Moosa and Haroon.” 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 “I swear I will cut off your hands and your feet from alternate sides and then crucify you all.” 124 They replied, "We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 Thou takest vengeance upon us only because we have believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour out upon us patience, and gather us unto Thee surrendering.' 126
