A throng of the ancients 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
