The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 and purify your robes, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
