In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little - 2 For half the night, or reduce some from it. 3 Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur'an in measure, 4 Indeed We shall soon ordain a heavy responsibility upon you. 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 But recite the name of your Lord withdrawing yourself from everything, devoting yourself exclusively to Him. 8 He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian. 9 Bear with patience what they say, and gracefully come away from them. 10 And leave them to Me – these wealthy deniers – and give them some respite. 11 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, 12 and food that chokes, and grievous suffering 13 On the Day when the earth and the mountains will be in violent shake, and the mountains will be a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Fir'aun (Pharaoh) disobeyed the Messenger [Musa (Moses)], so We seized him with a severe punishment. 16 Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey, 17 on which the heaven will split apart, and His promise is done. 18 This, verily, is a reminder: let him who wills, then set out on a way to his Sustainer! 19
