The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those that pray 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
