Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
