Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 And enter into My garden. 30
