The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 Consider the day as it reveals the world, 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 Consider the sky and its wondrous make, 5 And the earth and Him Who extended it, 6 By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it; 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 prosperous is he who purified it, 9 And miserable is he who hath buried it. 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!" 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
