The tribe of Ad rejected the Messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 124 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no hire therefor: my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 127 Do you build on every height a monument? Vain is it that you do: 128 And you make strong fortresses that perhaps you may 129 And will you [always,] whenever you lay hand [on others,] lay hand [on them] cruelly, without any restraint? 130 Rather keep your duty to Allah, and obey me. 131 Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know, 132 He hath aided you with cattle and sons. 133 And gardens and springs. 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 They replied: 'It is the same to us whether you admonish or whether you are not one of the admonishers. 136 This is not but the custom of the former peoples, 137 and we shall not be punished." 138 Then they accused him of lies; so We annihilated them. Verily there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 139 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 140
