The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Are free of blame, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
