Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
