The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 But We see it very near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
