By the moon, 32 and the night when it retreats 33 and the morn when it dawns! 34 Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions] 35 a warning to humankind, 36 To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind. 37 Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds; 38 Except those of the right hand 39 who shall be in the Gardens, and shall ask 40 of those who were lost in sin: 41 What hath brought you to this burning? 42 They will answer: "We were not among those who prayed; 43 And we have not been feeding the poor. 44 And plunged into useless things with those who were obstinate, 45 and we gave the lie to the Day of Judgement 46 until the Inevitable End [death] overtook us." 47 The intercession of the intercessors will be of no benefit to them. 48 What is the matter with people that they are turning away from this Exhortation, 49 like frightened donkeys 50 Fleeing from a lion! 51 Indeed, each one of them desires to be given unrolled scrolls. 52 No! But they do not fear the Hereafter. 53 Nay; this is an Exhortation. 54 So whoever pleases may mind it. 55 And they shall not heed unless Allah willeth. He is the Lord of piety, and the Lord of forgiveness. 56
