The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ WHEN WHAT IS to happen comes to pass -- 1 There is, at its occurrence, no denial. 2 Abasing (one party), exalting (the other), 3 When the earth will tremble, shivering. 4 and the mountains are totally shattered and crumble to pieces 5 so that they become as scattered dust 6 And you shall be three sorts. 7 The People on the Right: and how fortunate will be the People on the Right! 8 And the People on the Left: and how miserable will be the People on the Left! 9 But the foremost shall be [they who in life were] the foremost [in faith and good works]: 10 (The foremost ones) will be the nearest ones to God 11 In gardens of bliss [will they dwell] 12 A large group from the earlier generations. 13 And a few of those (foremost) will be from the later time (generations). 14 On lined couches, 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 There wait on them immortal youths 17 With cups, and jugs, and a glass from the flowing wine, 18 by which their minds will not be clouded and which will not make them drunk; 19 And fruit; that they may choose. 20 And with flesh of fowls from that which they desire. 21 And (there will be) Houris (fair females) with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for the pious), 22 Like unto hidden pearls, 23 The reward for what they did. 24 No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, nor any sinful speech (like backbiting, etc.). 25 Nought but the saying: peace! peace! 26 As for the people of the right hand, how happy they will be! 27 Among thornless lote-trees 28 and clustered bananas, 29 And spreading shade, 30 and flowing water 31 and an abundance of fruits, 32 Neither ending nor forbidden. 33 And maidens incomparable. 34 We have created maidens perfectly 35 And made them virgins, 36 The beloved of their husbands, of one age. 37 For the sake of the companions of the right hand. 38
