The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
