He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 you attend to him, 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 and in awe [of God] 9 Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 From Nutfah (male and female semen drops) He created him, and then set him in due proportion; 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And olives and palms 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 and fruits and fodder 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 laughing and joyous 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
