And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order." 90 They said, "We will never cease being devoted to the calf until Moses returns to us." 91 Then Moses asked Aaron, "What made you not follow me when you saw them in error? 92 so that thou didst not follow after me? Didst thou then disobey my commandment?' 93 Answered [Aaron]: "O my mother's son! Seize me not by my beard, nor by my head! Behold, I was afraid lest [on thy return] thou say, 'Thou hast caused a split among the children of Israel, and hast paid no heed to my bidding!" 94 Moses said: "What, then, is your case, O Samiri?" 95 He replied: "I saw what they saw not: so I took a handful (of dust) from the footprint of the Messenger, and threw it (into the calf): thus did my soul suggest to me." 96 Moses said, "Begone! It shall be your lot to say throughout your life, "Do not touch me," and you will be faced with a fate from which there will be no escape. Now look at your deity to which you have become so devoted: we shall burn it up, and then scatter it into the sea. 97 Your only deity is God, there is no deity but Him. His knowledge encompasses all things." 98 Thus do We relate to thee some stories of what happened before: for We have sent thee a Message from Our own Presence. 99 Whoever turns away from it will surely carry a burden on the Day of Judgement, 100 therein abiding forever; how evil upon the Day of Resurrection that burden for them! 101 On the day when the trumpet shall be blown, and We will gather the guilty, blue-eyed, on that day 102 and they shall murmur among themselves: 'You have stayed away but ten (days and nights)' 103 We are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner will say, "You remained not but one day." 104
