Jonah, too, was one of the Messengers. 139 Call to mind when he fled to the laden ship, 140 And lots were cast (when a storm overtook them), he was rejected, (and thrown overboard). 141 So the fish swallowed him while he did that for which he blamed himself 142 Had he not been one of those who glorify Allah, 143 he would certainly have remained inside the fish till the Day of Resurrection. 144 ۞ But We cast him, upon the shore, and he was ill, 145 And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind. 146 And We sent him to a hundred thousand (people) or even more. 147 And they believed, so We gave them provision till a time. 148 Now ask them their opinion: Is it that thy Lord has (only) daughters, and they have sons?- 149 Or did We make the angels females, and they witnessed it? 150 No indeed! It is one of their fabrications when they say: 151 Allah hath begotten. Allah! verily they tell a lie. 152 “Has he chosen daughters instead of sons?” 153 What is the matter with you that you make such strange judgements? 154 Will ye not then reflect? 155 Do you have clear authority? 156 Then bring your book, if you are truthful. 157 They link Him with jinns by lineage, yet the jinns know they will be brought before Him. 158 God is too glorious for what they ascribe to Him 159 Save single-minded slaves of Allah. 160 Wherefore verily neither ye nor that which ye worship, 161 Can mislead anyone away from Him, 162 Save him Who is to roast in the Flaming Fire. 163 There is not one of us (angels) but has his known place (or position); 164 Verily, we (angels), we stand in rows for the prayers (as you Muslims stand in rows for your prayers); 165 And we are most surely they who declare the glory (of Allah). 166 And indeed they (Arab pagans) used to say; 167 Had we but an admonition as had the ancients. 168 "We should certainly have been Servants of Allah, sincere (and devoted)!" 169 Yet (now that it is come) they disbelieve therein; but they will come to know. 170 Our word had already been given before to Our votaries, the apostles, -- 171 That they verily would be made triumphant. 172 And that Our host, they verily would be the victors. 173 So turn away (O Muhammad SAW) from them for a while, 174 and see them; soon they shall see! 175 Would they hasten on Our doom? 176 But then, once it alights upon them, hapless will be the awakening of those who were warned [to no avail]! 177 Leave them alone for a while, 178 And watch (how they fare) and they soon shall see (how thou farest)! 179 Glory be to thy Lord, the Lord of Glory, above that they describe! 180 And peace be upon the Envoys; 181 And praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds! 182
