Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
