Certainly Aaron had said to them even before (the return of Moses): "My people, you were fallen into error because of the calf. Surely your Lord is Most Compassionate; so follow me and obey my command." 90 They said "So long as Moses does not come back we are not going to give it up, and we will remain devoted to it." 91 (Moses) said: "O Aaron! what kept thee back, when thou sawest them going wrong, 92 "That you followed me not (according to my advice to you)? Have you then disobeyed my order?" 93 Harun said: O my mother's son! hold me not by my beard nor by my head, verily I feared that thou wouldst say, thou hast caused a division among the Children of Israel and hast not guarded my word. 94 Musa said: what was thy object, O Samiri? 95 (Samiri) said: "I saw what they saw not, so I took a handful (of dust) from the hoof print of the messenger [Jibrael's (Gabriel) horse] and threw it [into the fire in which were put the ornaments of the Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, or into the calf]. Thus my inner-self suggested to me." 96 'Begone! Your lot in this life is to cry: "untouchable!' said he (Moses). 'An appointment awaits you that you cannot fail to keep. Look at your god which you clung to indeed we will burn it and scatter its ashes upon the sea' 97 But the god of you all is the One Allah: there is no god but He: all things He comprehends in His knowledge. 98 Thus, [O Muhammad], We relate to you from the news of what has preceded. And We have certainly given you from Us the Qur'an. 99 Whoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden, 100 Abiding in this (state), and evil will it be for them to bear on the day of resurrection; 101 On the day the Trumpet is blown; and We shall muster the sinners upon that day with eyes staring, 102 In whispers will they speak to each other (saying): "You stayed not longer than ten (days)." 103 We know best what they say. The moderate ones among them will say, "You did not live on earth for more than a day." 104
