A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
