And certainly We sent Musa with Our communications to Firon and his chiefs, so he said: Surely I am the apostle of the Lord of the worlds. 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And not a sign We shewed them but it was greater than the like thereof; and We laid hold of them with the torment that haply they might turn. 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: 'O my people, do I not possess the kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flowing beneath me? What, do you not see? 51 “Or that I am better than him, for he is lowly – and he does not seem to talk plainly.” 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 Then he incited his people and they obeyed him; verily they were ever a transgressing people. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples. 56
