The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
