He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 you attended to him, 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And hath fear, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 noble and purified. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
