He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 You pay full attention, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 laughing and joyous 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
God the Almighty always says the truth.
