The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the sun and its morning brightness, 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 And by the heaven and Him Who built it; 5 And the earth and Him Who extended it, 6 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 prosperous is he who purified it, 9 And miserable is he who hath buried it. 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 the Messenger of Allah said to them: '(This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink' 13 But they gave him the lie, and cruelly slaughtered her - whereupon their Sustainer visited them with utter destruction for this their sin, destroying them all alike: 14 And for Him is no fear of its consequences. 15
