Nay, by the moon, 32 and the night when it retreats 33 And the dawn when it shineth forth, 34 hell is certainly the greatest calamity. 35 a warning to mortal man 36 To any of you that chooses to go forward (by working righteous deeds), or to remain behind (by commiting sins), 37 Each soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 Except those of the right hand 39 [dwelling] In gardens [of paradise,] they will inquire 40 About the guilty: 41 What hath brought you to this burning? 42 They will reply, "We did not pray, 43 Nor did we feed the wretched. 44 "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; 45 and we denied the Day of Judgement 46 “Till death overcame us.” 47 So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors. 48 Then what is wrong with them that they turn away from admonition, 49 like frightened donkeys 50 Fleeing from a hunter, or a lion, or a beast of prey. 51 Nay; every one of them desires that he may be given pages spread out; 52 By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter, 53 Never so, as this is a reminder. 54 So whoever wills may heed advice from it. 55 No one will seek guidance unless God wills it. He alone is worthy of being feared and He is the Source of Forgiveness. 56
