The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 except those that pray, 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
