The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 And by oath of the day when it reveals it 3 And [by] the night when it covers it 4 And the heaven and Him Who made it, 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 Indeed successful is the one who made it pure. 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 Thamood belied in their pride 11 when the most corrupt of them incited them (to commit evil). 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 He has no fear of its sequel. 15
