The elders of Pharaoh's people said: 'Surely this man is a skilful magician 109 and said, "He wants to expel you from your land." They asked (others), " what is your opinion in the matter? 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 who shall bring before thee every sorcerer of great knowledge." 112 The sorcerers came to Pharaoh. They said: 'Shall we be rewarded if we are the winners' 113 He answered: Yes, and surely ye shall be of those brought near (to me). 114 They said: "O Musa (Moses)! Either you throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" 115 He said, “You throw”; when they threw, they cast a magic spell upon the people’s eyes and terrified them, and they brought a great magic. 116 And We revealed to Moses: 'Cast thy staff!' And lo, it forthwith swallowed up their lying invention. 117 ۞ So, the truth prevailed and what they were doing was annulled; 118 Pharaoh and his men were defeated and put to shame, 119 And down fell the sorcerers, prostrating themselves 120 [and] exclaiming: "We have come to believe in the Sustainer of all the worlds, 121 “The Lord of Moosa and Haroon.” 122 Said Pharaoh, 'You have believed in Him before I gave you leave. Surely this is a device you have devised in the city that you may expel its people from it. Now you shall know! 123 Surely I will cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides and thereafter I will crucify you all. 124 They said: Surely to our Lord shall we go back: 125 for thou takest vengeance on us only because we have come to believe in our Sustainer's messages as soon as they came to us. O our Sustainer! Shower us with patience in adversity, and make us die as men who have surrendered themselves unto Thee!" 126
