Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
