The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
